Simple Paganism: Practical Ways to Weave Magic into Everyday Life
I’ve always loved the idea of simple paganism. Not grand rituals beneath the full moon or ancient incantations spoken in hushed tones, but instead, a quiet sort of magic, woven into the fabric of the everyday.
A type of magic that is accessible to everyone. It requires no elaborate tools, no rare ingredients, no secret knowledge. It exists in the very core of your being, waiting to be remembered.
It’s in the steam curling from a morning cup of tea, a whispered intention as the sun rises over the hillside. The simple act of leaving offerings for the birds, the way your hands press into the earth - planting, tending, listening.
It’s in the pull of the tides, the rhythm of the seasons, the stories written in tree rings and fallen leaves. Magic isn’t just found in old books and sacred spaces - it’s in the mundane, the unnoticed, the in-between.
So how do we infuse our daily lives with this quiet magic?
How do we walk through the modern world with one foot in the old ways?
Here are my thoughts on how to bring simple paganism into your everyday life.

🌿 Connecting to Nature
Paganism for me is rooted in a reverence and connection with nature, and that’s always my top priority. In modern life, it’s easy to become disconnected. Concrete replaces forest floors, streetlights drown out the moon, and we move too fast to notice the turning of the seasons.
But I also want to be clear - you yourself are part of nature. Even if you live in a city or don’t have easy access to wild spaces, that doesn’t mean you need to feel disconnected. You are a creature of nature, and you can invite connection into your life too.
Reconnecting with nature doesn’t require moving to the woods. It starts with awareness, presence, and small, daily acts. These are my practical suggestions:
✨ Say hello to everything - When I’m out in nature, I love to greet everything I see. I believe in the animistic principle that every living thing has a spirit, a life force, and an essence, and I treat it as such. When I walk outside I whisper to the birds, the rocks, the mushrooms, the trees, and I feel them whispering back. Whether in the park, on a street corner, or in your own home, acknowledge the living beings around you. Speak a greeting to a tree, touch its bark, learn its name. Connection begins with recognition.
✨ Walk in nature with intention – A simple walk can become a ritual of presence. Take the time to take a really meditative walk without earphones or lots of chit chat, and instead, really immerse yourself in the land. Feel the wind, listen to the birds, notice the tiny details - moss on stone, shifting light, the scent of rain. If you can, walk the same path regularly and observe how it changes with the seasons.
✨ Get curious - One of the best things I have done in recent years is work to learn as much as I can about the natural world. I remember taking a walk one day and looking at the hedgerow and thinking ‘I can barely name a plant here’. I felt almost shameful , so instead I turned it into action and took the time to get to know different plants. One at a time, explore your relationship to a plant and get to know it deeply. You’ll be amazed at what you find in science, folklore and even food or herbalism. The same applies for animals and insects - make it your mission to learn them all by name!
✨ Collect small treasures – Fallen leaves, feathers, stones from the riverbed - nature offers gifts to those who pay attention. Of course, collect things responsibly, but these objects can be placed on an altar, carried as charms, or simply kept as reminders of the world outside.
✨ Create a nature altar – This is a small space in your home dedicated to the natural world. Fill it with seasonal objects, dried herbs, candles, or anything that connects you to the earth’s cycles.
🕯 Small Rituals of Everyday Magic
Rituals don’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. In a busy life, it can be hard to make time for ceremony and the last thing you want to do is make it feel like another chore that you have to tick off your to-do list. I believe that magic can be found in the small, intentional moments of daily life. Here are my ideas:
🌙 Tea as a ritual – Your morning tea or coffee can be more than just a drink. Take a few moments from your day to really sit with your drink, perhaps inhaling the scent of the herbs, perhaps gazing out of a window, or sitting outside. You could stir an intention into the drink, or whisper a wish into the steam. Choose herbs based on their properties but follow your intuition - perhaps this means lavender for peace, peppermint for clarity, or chamomile for rest.
🖋 Sigils in unexpected places – Sigils are symbols created with personal intent, and are a simple yet powerful way to weave magic into your day. Trace them onto fogged-up mirrors, draw them in the dirt, carve them into candles, or doodle them onto your wrist. A simple thing to do is make a little sigil in moisturiser as you do your skincare (even a love heart and a whispered affirmation for self love counts!)
🛁 Bathing as cleansing – Water can be transformed into something deeply magical. A bath can be turned into a ritual by adding herbs, salts, or oils. Even a simple shower can be used to visualise washing away negativity and stepping into renewal.
🎭 Finding Community
Though modern life can feel solitary, paganism has long been about connection - to nature, to spirits, and to each other. Many traditions have survived through communal celebration, and some still exist in local folklore and festivals today. I used to think I was the strangest person in the world and I’d never find anyone like me, but I was so wrong!
🍎 Local meet ups – I can often be found trawling Facebook for events or groups, or googling avidly into the night to try and find meetups in my area. I’m not always successful, and often I feel quite intimidated or shy about attending things, but I am always so glad when I go to something. See what you can find near you, you may be surprised.
🖥️ Online community– The internet can be extremely helpful for finding people with similar interests. Of course, be safe and sensible, but see who you can find on social media. A few of my best friends in the world I have met on Instagram, we simply messaged each other and said ‘you seem cool, let’s hang out!’ and the rest is history.
📚 Learning & Knowledge
Staying curious is one of the best ways to deepen your understanding of the world, its traditions and so many interesting philosophies. The stories of our ancestors, the wisdom of the land, and the myths passed down through generations all hold keys to understanding the world. I search for things that are directly related to paganism and my interests, but I keep an open mind and love exploring all sorts of cultures and religions.
📖 Read non-fiction – Books on folklore, herbalism, mythology, and history offer insight into both ancient and modern pagan practices. Exploring the traditions of your own ancestors can bring a deeper connection to your path, but stay curious and explore elsewhere too.
📜 Read stories – Fiction, fairytales, and folklore carry old magic in their words. Stories have always been a way to pass down wisdom, whether through ancient epics, gothic tales, or modern fantasy. These stories also inspire me and remind me to seek out the whimsy and magic in the world.
📺 Watch documentaries & films – Folklore isn’t just in books; it’s in the visual stories we tell. Documentaries on ancient sites, historical paganism, or local myths can be a fascinating way to learn.
🍵 Herbs & Food Magic
A really simple way to bring in a bit more magic into your life is through herbs and food. There is magic in what we consume, what we grow, and what we nurture. Edible plants have been used magically for centuries, and they remain one of the most accessible ways to bring magic into daily life.
🌿 Drinking tea with purpose – Herbal tea is one of the simplest forms of plant magic. Choose ingredients that align with your needs (I like to look to folklore for this but never forget to access my own intuition and follow that most of all!). Often people use things like peppermint for clarity, rose for self-love, or mugwort for dreams. Stir with intention, breathe in the aroma, and let it be a moment of ritual.
🌱 Working with plant magic – Even if you don’t have a garden, you can work with herbs. Drying flowers, making infused oils, or simply learning the folklore behind common plants can create a deeper connection.
🥖 Cooking with intention – Every meal can be an offering, a spell, or a ritual. Stir energy into soup, bake wishes into bread, or leave the first bite of a meal as an offering to the spirits of the home.
You don’t need to live in the deep woods or wear flowing robes to practice paganism. Magic is already here - in the air you breathe, the earth beneath your feet, the fire in your heart.
It’s in the simple things, the quiet moments, the unnoticed enchantments.
This is simple paganism.
A way of seeing.
A way of being.
And it is yours to claim.
